Armies of Compassion?
Rothbard, in the inaugural Libertarian (later to be called The Libertarian Forum) wrote on what he termed Creeping Cornuellism--the program of Nixon, newly elected, to adopt a new federal agency in charge of coordinating the so-called independent sector, as described by the erstwhile anarchist, and student of Mises, Richard Cornuelle. His descriptions of what such a program is bound to resemble and tend toward seem peculiarly apt in the era of George W.'s 'compassionate conservatism'.
Fundamentally, it "cloaks and camouflages the viper of statism in the soothing raiment of voluntaristic and pseudo-libertarian rhetoric." It smells of not just Hoover's presidency, with his velvet-gloved steel fist, but F.D.R. and Mussolini, a regime "in which coercive government multiplied its power by mobilizing the support of masses of misguided 'volunteers' from among the citizenry." It is the template of the corporate state, in fact, where "everything is cozily mixed, in an ever-intensifying 'partnership' of Big Government and Big Business (with Big Unionism as the happy junior partner)."
At present time, with a different president in power, the Brookings Institute writes sympathetically of such a system, a system where "[t]he organizations mobilizing the "armies of compassion" need corporals and sergeants" and which involves "as many Americans as possible in serving their country during a time of war."
