The Cake is Rotten: Charles W. Johnson (2001)

Should Adam and Steve, or Lilith and Eve, be allowed to marry, asks the author? No more than should Adam and Eve be allowed to enter such a traditionally heterosexist and logically biased (in favor of monogamy) institution of (necessarily) public-private nature. The libertarian solution, to allow all to contract for marriage, is found wanting, as is the liberal-reformist case for equal opportunity at some level above zero.

Why, after all, should social and governmental sanction go to one form of relationship over another? What overriding social purpose or protection of liberty is protected by marriage?
